3 Fun Popcorn Recipes for Movie Night (with the Whirley Pop)

Where are all our popcorn lovers at??? 🙋 How do you like your popcorn? Comment below and let us know!

Whether it’s a long winter evening on a lazy weekend or a fun pool party in the middle of summer, popcorn is our family’s favorite snack. We make all of our popcorn on the stovetop in a popcorn popping device, the good ol’ Whirley Pop. Before we got married, Kelvin had never heard of the Whirley Pop. Now we use it on a weekly basis. Typically we make two batches of popcorn for our family of seven.

We love making our own popcorn because it’s saves money and it’s healthier!

Classic Homemade Popcorn

This is how Meg makes popcorn with the Whirley Pop, the way she learned from her mom and Amish Grosmommy.

  • 5-6 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil

  • 3/4 Cup Popcorn (white kernels make the most tender popcorn)

  • Finely ground salt to taste (or your favorite popcorn seasoning — my favorite is nutritional yeast)

  • A giant bowl to hold all the popcorn!

Put the coconut oil and popcorn inside the Whirley Pop.

Stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes until the popcorn pops, then empty it into a large bowl. Popcorn pops best at medium heat, and it prevents the oil from scorching.

Once the popcorn starts popping, it’ll fill the container of the Whirley Pop pretty quickly. Sometimes you’ll want to dump out a little popcorn in the bowl and then keep stirring the rest until it finishes popping.

Empty all the popcorn into a giant bowl and season with your favorite popcorn seasoning!

This is healthy and easy popcorn for your family movie night.... or any time that popcorn just sounds like a good idea.

The Best Kettle Corn Recipe

  • 6 quarts popped popcorn

  • 3/4 cup of white sugar

  • 1 cup of salted butter

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Follow the first recipe to pop the popcorn.

Slowly melt the sugar, butter, salt and coconut oil until the sugar completely melts. The coconut oil keeps the butter from browning, and it’s the secret to making the best kettle corn, EVER. Bring this mixture to a boil, briefly, and then let it cool for just a few minutes.

Drizzle the buttery mixture over the popped popcorn and toss to coat it. This is delicious, lightly sweetened kettle corn for anyone who has a sweet tooth.

Bonus tip: to make it fun, add food coloring to the butter mixture. Kids love fun, colored popcorn!

Pizza Popcorn

INSPIRED BY GIADA DE LAURENTIIS

  • 6 quarts popped popcorn

  • 6 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature

  • 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes in oil

  • 1 clove garlic, smashed

  • 5 tablespoons grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

  • 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 cup chopped pepperoni

  • 1/2 teaspoon finely ground salt

Chop 1/2 cup of pepperoni and set it aside.

In a food processor, puree the butter, tomatoes and garlic until it forms a smooth paste. Heat a small saute pan over medium heat and add the butter mixture. Heat the butter until melted down and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.

Drizzle the warm, flavored butter, cheese, oregano, pepperoni, and salt over your bowl of popped popcorn. Toss to coat, and then serve.

WARNING: If you have any pizza lovers, this popcorn may disappear in seconds.

BONUS TIP: Make a Popcorn Bar

In our home, it’s important to encourage each child’s sense of individuality. They love when we create a popcorn bar with a variety of different powdered popcorn seasonings and let them season their own popcorn.

How do you like your popcorn? We’d love to hear from you!
